Chucky, America’s favorite killer doll, is back yet again in the upcoming Curse of Chucky. It’s been a long time since Chucky last graced the big screen. The last entry in the Child’s Play series was 2004’s Seed of Chucky, which received mixed reviews due to its absurd plotline and raunchy humor. Curse of Chucky ignores Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky entirely, and is instead a direct sequel to Child’s Play 3. This latest entry in the Child’s Play series will be released directly to Blu-ray/DVD on October 8. The specifications for both formats can be found here.

The plot summary from IMDB for Curse of Chucky is as follows:

After the events of Child’s Play 3, Nica, a young woman forced to a wheelchair since birth, has to regroup her sister, Barb and her brother-in-law, Ian for a funeral after the death of her mother. While dealing with Barb, Ian, along with their 5-year-old daughter, Alice; Nica receives an odd package – a creepy doll. After people start showing up dead, the fearless Nica soon suspects that the creepy doll is much more than just a doll.

Brad Dourif again plays the voice of Chucky. His daughter, Fiona Dourif (True Blood), plays the character of wheelchair-bound Nica. Summer H. Howell plays Nica’s daughter, 5-year-old Alice. Don Mancini is back yet again as Writer/Director. This is Mancini’s second time directing a Child’s Play film; the first time was Seed of Chucky.

A trailer released on July 8 now has over 1.5 million views. Apart from that, however, there is relatively little information available online and several questions that remain unanswered.

1. How will the plotline of Curse of Chucky sync up with Child’s Play 3? The end of Child’s Play 3 showed Chucky being torn to pieces by a giant fan. This led to Chucky’s girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) stitching up the doll for the Bride of Chucky/Seed of Chucky The new Curse of Chucky trailer doesn’t show the doll with any damage. Was Chucky’s soul transferred into a different doll or is there another explanation?
2. Will Curse of Chucky end with a direct tie-in to Bride of Chucky, or will it be more open-ended? Will the series continue as if Bride of Chucky/Seed of Chucky never happened? The answer to these questions will of course impact directly any potential follow-up films. If there is a direct tie-in to Bride of Chucky, then a follow-up would most likely need to be a “reboot” of the series or a comedic sequel continuing the Bride of Chucky/Seed of Chucky There have been discussions of both a reboot and a continuation in the comedic style, so it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here.
3. How many sales will Curse of Chucky need to make in order to be successful? According to IMDB, the film cost $8 million to make. Will it make enough money back to justify any future sequels, or will this be the end of the line for the series?
4. The film’s release date could be up in the air. Originally, it seems the release date had been set for September 24. Now the release date seems to be October 8. Keep an eye out on Amazon.com and other retailers to see if the release date changes at all.
