The feeding frenzy surrounding Sharknado continues to grow, according to Entertainment Weekly. The SyFy original debuted on July 11, 2013 with a respectable 1.4 million viewers, slightly below average for the network’s original films. Sharknado then went “viral”, particularly among Twitter users where it was trending at a staggering 5,000 tweets per minute. The film has continued to garner interest, particularly on social networks. Its 2nd airing on July 18 increased to 1.9 million viewers. Its 3rd airing on July 27 saw an increase to 2.1 million viewers, setting a record for the network.

Sharknado, released by The Asylum, is considered a “mockbuster” and is directed by Anthony C. Ferrante. It stars Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills, 90210), Tara Reid (American Pie) and John Heard (The Sopranos). The film’s tagline pretty much sums up the plot: “Enough said!” That, and Ian Ziering famously chops a shark in half with a chainsaw.

In case you’ve managed to avoid this budding cult classic so far, Sharknado hits theaters on Aug. 2 for a one-day-only special midnight screening. The film will be shown at 200 locations across the country in select Regal, Edwards and United Artists cinemas. Tickets are priced at just $12.50. Locally, Sharknado is playing at Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX in Seattle and Regal Alderwood Stadium 7 & RPX in Lynnwood.

For TV viewers Sharknado will have its final airing on Aug. 22 on SyFy, immediately followed by the premiere of Ghost Shark. A trailer for Ghost Shark can be found here. Fans of Sharknado won’t have to wait long, however, as a New York-set sequel has already been green-lighted and is expected in July of 2014.
